Thresholds sheds light on the importance of safeguarding individual and collective health through the rituals and traditions of the African continent. Each carefully curated artifact narrates a tale of transcendence and intergenerational protection. From birth and initiation to marriage and death, these major milestones are accompanied by unique ceremonies, rituals, and artistic expressions that honor the passage from one stage to another. For example, the Krobo people of Ghana hold Dipo, the rite of passage ceremony for girls. “The ceremony is an important cultural tradition for the Krobo people and is seen as a way of preserving their heritage. It is also an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the growth and development of their young girls,” said Kay Crawford, owner of several pieces in the exhibit. Journey through the rich tapestry of Black cultural legacy and discover the profound significance of the pieces. “Many of the ceremonies and rituals symbolized by the artifacts in this exhibit made their way to the Americas and are practiced in new ways. Our exploration of the old and implementation in new ways is part of the practice of Sankofa, looking back as we move forward,” explained museum director, Charlene Farrington. Visitors can explore this exhibit featuring pieces from the Spady Museum Collection and special artifacts from the Kay Crawford Collection and the Dr. Cecil Jonas Collection. Thresholds is co-curated by Joanne Hamsptead and Khaulah Naima Nuruddin.
